Critical Skills List
The Critical Skills List is a list of occupations published by the South African Department of Home Affairs (DHA) that are considered to be in high demand in the country. Foreign nationals whose occupations appear on this list may apply for a Critical Skills Work Visa.
How It Works
The list is gazetted by the Minister of Home Affairs and is periodically updated to reflect changes in the labour market. Occupations are classified using the Organising Framework for Occupations (OFO) codes.
Current Categories
The list typically includes occupations in:
- Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
- Engineering (civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical)
- Health professions (doctors, specialists, pharmacists)
- Finance and accounting
- Natural and life sciences
- Architecture and surveying
Verification
Before applying, verify that your specific occupation and OFO code appear on the most recent gazetted list. The list is available on the DHA website and in the Government Gazette.
Relationship to Scarce Skills
The Critical Skills List replaced the earlier Scarce Skills List. While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, the Critical Skills List is the current official document used for visa applications.
