Critical Skills Work Visa — South Africa
The Critical Skills Work Visa allows foreign nationals with skills in high demand to live and work in South Africa. It is governed by Section 19(4) of the Immigration Act.
Who Is Eligible?
You may qualify if your occupation appears on the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) Critical Skills List and you hold the relevant qualifications and experience.
Requirements
Documents Needed
- Valid passport (minimum 12 months validity beyond intended stay)
- Completed DHA-1738 application form
- SAQA evaluation certificate
- Proof of critical skill qualification
- Professional body registration (where applicable)
- CV/resume
- Medical report (DHA-1740)
- Radiological report (DHA-1741)
- Police clearance from every country lived in for 12+ months since age 18
Processing Times
Current processing times are approximately 8-12 weeks from submission at a VFS Global office. Times may vary based on DHA workload and completeness of application.
Fees
- DHA application fee: R1,520
- VFS service fee: approximately R1,350
- SAQA evaluation: approximately R1,280
Common Pitfalls
- Incomplete SAQA evaluation — ensure your qualification is fully evaluated before applying
- Missing police clearances — required from ALL countries you've lived in, not just your home country
- Outdated Critical Skills List — verify your occupation is on the current list
- Professional registration gaps — some professions require HPCSA, ECSA, or other body registration
After Approval
Once approved, the Critical Skills Visa is valid for up to 5 years. You may apply for permanent residence after holding a critical skills visa for a minimum period.
