Relatives Visa — South Africa
The Relatives Visa allows certain family members of South African citizens or permanent residents to join them in the country. It is issued under Section 18 of the Immigration Act.
Who Is Eligible?
Eligible relatives include parents, children, siblings, and grandparents of South African citizens or permanent residents. The relationship must be proven with official documentation.
Documents Needed
- Completed DHA-1738 application form
- Valid passport with sufficient validity
- Unabridged birth certificate or other proof of relationship
- Letter of invitation from the SA relative
- Certified copy of the relative's South African ID or permanent residence permit
- Proof that the relative can financially support the applicant, or proof of the applicant's own means
- Medical (DHA-1740) and radiological (DHA-1741) reports
- Police clearance certificates

Approximately 8-12 weeks from submission.
Work Rights
Relatives visa holders are generally not permitted to work in South Africa unless they also hold a valid work endorsement. Some categories may apply for a work endorsement separately.
Common Pitfalls
- Insufficient proof of relationship — unabridged birth certificates and marriage certificates must be apostilled or authenticated
- Financial support documentation — the sponsor must show adequate means to support the applicant
- Confusing relatives visa with spousal visa — spouses apply under a different section
