Study Visa — South Africa
The Study Visa (also called a Study Permit) allows foreign nationals to study at registered educational institutions in South Africa. It is issued under Section 13 of the Immigration Act.
Who Is Eligible?
Any foreign national who has been accepted by a South African educational institution registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) may apply.
Documents Needed
- Completed DHA-1738 application form
- Valid passport with sufficient validity
- Official acceptance letter from the institution
- Proof of payment of tuition fees (or scholarship letter)
- Proof of sufficient financial means for living expenses
- Proof of medical insurance coverage in South Africa
- Proof of accommodation (lease, hostel booking, or letter from host)
- Medical (DHA-1740) and radiological (DHA-1741) reports
- Police clearance certificates (applicants 18 and older)
- Parental consent and birth certificate (for minors)
Processing Times
Approximately 6-10 weeks from submission. Apply well in advance of your intended start date.
Work While Studying
Study visa holders may work part-time (up to 20 hours per week during term time) with endorsement from DHA, provided the institution consents.
Common Pitfalls
- Applying too late — start the process at least 3-4 months before your course begins
- Unregistered institution — verify that the institution is registered with the DHET
- Insufficient financial proof — show enough funds for the full duration of study
