Permanent Residence Permit — a permit granting a foreign national the right to live and work in South Africa indefinitely.

PRP — Permanent Residence Permit

A Permanent Residence Permit (PRP) grants a foreign national the right to reside and work in South Africa indefinitely. It is issued under Sections 25-27 of the Immigration Act.

Categories

  • Section 25 — Work-based PR for holders of work visas (typically after 5 years)
  • Section 26 — Spousal PR for foreign spouses in genuine relationships (after 5 years)
  • Section 27(b) — Critical skills holders
  • Section 27(c) — Retired persons
  • Section 27(d) — Financially independent persons

Rights of PR Holders

Permanent residents may live, work, and study in South Africa without restriction. They are not required to renew their status periodically. PR holders may apply for South African citizenship after meeting residency requirements.

Obligations

PR holders must carry their permit at all times and may not be absent from South Africa for more than 3 consecutive years without permission, or their permit may lapse.
