TRP — Temporary Residence Permit

A Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) is a visa that allows a foreign national to live in South Africa for a specified period and purpose. TRPs cover work visas, study visas, business visas, spousal visas, and other temporary categories.

Types of TRPs

  • Work visas (Critical Skills, General Work, Intra-Company Transfer, Corporate)
  • Study visas
  • Business visas
  • Spousal and relatives visas
  • Retired persons visas
  • Exchange visas
  • Medical treatment visas

Key Characteristics

  • Valid for a fixed period (typically 1-5 years depending on category)
  • Tied to a specific purpose (e.g., employment with a named employer)
  • Must be renewed before expiry to maintain legal status
  • Holders must carry their visa at all times

Renewal and Status Changes

TRP holders must apply for renewal before their current visa expires. Overstaying renders a person an illegal foreigner and may result in a ban from re-entering South Africa. It is also possible to change visa categories while in South Africa, subject to DHA approval.
